Pre-shipment quality control is your last line of defense against defective products reaching your customers. Here’s a practical checklist for buyers importing cat water fountains, automatic feeders, and related products.
The QC checklist
Visual inspection
Surface defects. Check for scratches, dents, discoloration, and flash (excess plastic) on all visible surfaces.
Color consistency. Verify that product color matches approved samples across the entire batch.
Print quality. Check logos, labels, and markings for clarity, alignment, and adhesion.
Component completeness. Verify that all parts, accessories, and documentation are included.
Functional testing
Pump operation. Test a sample of fountains for water flow, noise level, and sensor response.
Feeder dispensing. Test feeders for portion accuracy, schedule reliability, and jam resistance.
WiFi connectivity. Verify that smart products connect reliably to the app and maintain connection.
Power cycling. Test products through multiple power on/off cycles to verify reliability.
Safety checks
Electrical safety. Verify that power adapters have proper certifications and that wiring is secure.
Material safety. Confirm food-grade material certifications for water and food-contact components.
Sharp edges. Check all edges for sharpness — particularly important for products used by pets.
Stability. Verify that fountains don’t tip easily and feeders don’t slide during operation.
Packaging verification
Protective packaging. Ensure packaging adequately protects the product during shipping.
Component inclusion. Verify that all accessories, manuals, and warranty cards are included.
Label accuracy. Check that product labels match the actual product specifications.
Drop test. Test one packaged unit from 1 meter to verify packaging effectiveness.
How to conduct QC
Option 1: In-house inspection
If you have staff in the manufacturing region, conduct inspection yourself using this checklist.
Option 2: Third-party inspection
Hire an independent inspection company (SGS, Bureau Veritas, Intertek, or similar) to conduct pre-shipment inspection. This provides an objective assessment and documentation.
Option 3: Factory QC support
Some manufacturers provide QC documentation and invite buyer inspection. HS Smart Pet provides AQL inspection reports and welcomes buyer verification.
AQL sampling
AQL (Acceptable Quality Level) is the statistical sampling method used for quality inspection:
- AQL 1.0 — Strict inspection (fewer defects allowed)
- AQL 2.5 — Standard inspection (balanced approach)
- AQL 4.0 — Reduced inspection (more defects allowed)
For consumer products, AQL 2.5 is standard. For higher-value or safety-critical products, AQL 1.0 is preferred.
Common defects to watch for
Fountains: Leaking seals, noisy pumps, weak flow, sensor malfunction, filter bypass.
Feeders: Jamming, inaccurate portions, WiFi connectivity issues, motor noise, hopper lid problems.
General: Missing components, incorrect labels, packaging damage, cosmetic defects.
The bottom line
Pre-shipment quality control prevents defective products from reaching your customers. A systematic approach — visual inspection, functional testing, safety checks, and packaging verification — catches issues before they become costly problems.
